73cm Murray Cod on the Bendy Roller Popper!
I had a late afternoon exploration trip to find some new water for future overnight trips, currently the river is in a transition stage and it won’t be long before we’ll be needing the Winter clothes again. The plan was to work the water fairly quickly, casting at only the best snags.
It didn’t take long before I switched to a large surface fly. The first strike was awsome moving great volumes of water, unfortunately no hookup. Casting back to him I worked the popper slowly beside his snaggy hideout, I could see the fish clearly as he eyeballed the fly. His next strike was better directed and he soon felt the sting of a 4/0 Gamakatsu hook. This fish put up a hell of a battle and even managed a jump, something I have never witnessed before. Running the tape measure over him revealed 73cms which equates to roughly an 8 kilo fish. He was soon released. Nick.
